The word “communion” here is the Greek word “Koinonia” which means partnership, participation, intercourse, fellowship among others. 
Communion with the Holy Spirit is like standing at the edge of a great sea and attempting to reach further. It’s a journey into the deep from the shallow to the deepest until deep calls unto deep.
“Deep calls unto deep at the noise of your waterspouts: all your billows are gone over me.” (Psalm 42:7)
We begin with our feet in the water, and then we go even further. We reach where the water has taken up the knee, but we are not to stop there.
